The fire was about a mile from the hotel when the Maui County Fire Department order the hotel to evacuate everyone to Manele Bay Harbor and onto boats. As of 5:45 pm, evacuated guests and staffers had been allowed to return to the resort, even while firefighters continued to deal with the flames across Lanai. According to the <a href="http://kgmb9.com/main/content/view/11580/40/">local news</a>, the hotel had issued a statement saying the evacuation was just a precaution and everyone was back at the hotel safely. Both of these hotels were due to make a big splash on the Cotai Strip in Macau in the next two years as the Sheraton was to be the largest hotel on the strip with over 4,000 rooms (!!) and the St. Regis would have about 800 units, evenly split between luxury residences and hotel rooms.
