Is it just us, or do Aloft hotels make anyone else reminisce about the old-school cartoon show "Animaniacs," with Pinky and the Brain on a persistent quest for world domination? The dialogue writes itself:

Brian McGuinness, vice president of Aloft: Gee Frits, what do you want to do tonight?
Frits van Paasschen, CEO of Starwood: The same thing we do every night--try to take over the world.

And in spite of a few documented setbacks, Aloft gets one step closer January 1. Aloft Dulles-North, located near Washington Dulles Airport some 30 miles from our fair nation's capital, has rescheduled its November opening for one (presumably) well-timed with inauguration mania.

It's worth noting that though they're claiming a Jan. 1 opening date, they're not taking reservations until Jan. 15. But that still gets you lodging in time for the Jan. 20 changing of the real Commander in Chief, which actually is a pretty big deal considering most D.C. hotels are either already booked or sure to practice that oh-so-patriotic duty of jacking up their prices in honor of the inauguration.

Case in point: The first Friday the new Aloft can be booked--Jan. 16--rates are just $99, but prices soar the following week, hitting $309 for the days surrounding Jan. 20.

As for the Aloft's hotel amenities? You know the drill: a trendy "loft" feel, the W XYZ bar, the re:fuel food pantry. Nothing new to see here. Except, of course, for the property's very own blog, which features posts about the hotel, the surrounding area, and cute personal posts by the staffers.

    What a trek ...

That would be a crappy commute/trek out to the Inauguration from Dulles - especially without any rail project started. But with those room prices, the cab/bus ride downtown might be worth it in comparison to DC hotels.
